Executive Summary
Food is used as a manipulation tool and a controlling method to ensure certain people get better food than others. This would be achieved by marketing of foods in high end grocery stores as opposed to low end grocery stores and the amount of prices for the individual food or drink items. The purpose of marketing food to different people is a tactic of control and getting better money from those that can afford to put more money into higher quality foods that are rich in protein and carbs as opposed to fast food. Using different poetry styles to communicate the food disparity would be beneficial because people would understand in many or few words what the message was: to consciously eat healthy and maintain a robust eating lifestyle that takes care of your entire body and body systems.
Statement of the Problem
A specific problem that I will address is how food is used as a manipulation tool and as a controlling method to ensure those who are unable to afford a higher level of food products go for those that are unhealthy and damaging to their body systems (such as fast food). For instance certain foods are processed (chicken nuggets) or come prepared in a box (Lunchables) or in a can (Spam) or in a box (Minute products for example boil in a bag rice) all of which are unhealthy and have the added designation of catering for those who are low income. It is sad to see that the better food is catered towards the wealthy and rich as well as middle class but the bad food is catered towards the low income or below poverty line people. Instead of making the same foods accessible to everyone regardless of what the income level is, there is a discrepancy between food for the wealthy as opposed to food for the poor.
Working in a grocery store I find that some people prefer healthy foods, and some prefer to stock up on foods that are not as healthy. Some people buy fruits and vegetables, and some don’t. Some come often to the store to buy food and some come when it is feasible. Regardless, they all teach me weekly through their shopping habits what to buy and what not to buy (especially since food prices have gone up a little.)
The existing texts that I will be using is Wendell Berry’s the pleasure of eating (Module 1- Wednesday, 18 January 2023), Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (Module 2- Wednesday, 8 February 2023), and Mark Bittman’s Creating Famine (Monday, 13 February 2023).
Project Snapshot
The purpose of the text that I will produce is to show through poetry how food is used as a tool of manipulation or control in societies across the world to control how much people eat and where they get their food. The texts that I will be using is Wendell Berry’s the pleasure of eating (Module 1- Wednesday, 18 January 2023), Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (Module 2- Wednesday, 8 February 2023), and Mark Bittman’s Creating Famine (Monday, 13 February 2023).
The genre is poetry. The medium is a PowerPoint and the scope of content I will produce is twenty-five poems along with a book. The audience I will focus my poetry towards is the Garden Manager and her volunteers. The conditions that my audience will encounter my texts are physical and written based.
The possible limitations or potential barriers to success would be the limitations of where to put the poems and how people can see my work of art in a tangible way without encroaching on the beauty of the garden space. Also making the language easily accessible and understood for all ages.
Rationale
The reason my proposed text would be effective is because through different poetry styles I could show my readers how food insecurity, food control, and food manipulation are used to weaken those who need food the most. Without much healthy and organic or plant based options low-income or below poverty level people cannot eat healthy for a small amount. Instead of relying on unhealthy foods such as processed or fat based or even high sodium content in their food that leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issues that could easily have been avoided.
The reason my proposed genre would be effective would be because I can make the poem as long or short as I want and it still would contain the simplistic beauty of the emotions of the garden. I would write it from the viewpoint of whatever plant or flower I am working with in the garden. The way I would do this is to ask the Garden Manager and her volunteers if they have a detailed idea of what is grown in the garden and ask them how I can best use that information to make the garden more alive with poetry and where I can place my poems and how they can explain what is in the garden without taking up too much space.
The reason my proposed medium of a PowerPoint presentation would be effective is because my classmates and future students of yours would be able to see the intricacies of the garden in a poetic format and have a better understanding of the garden and how it nourishes those who go there for food and lively conversation.
The people that would benefit from my proposed project would be the Garden Manager and her volunteers because they would know what would be growing in the garden and when it would grow and how to effectively use my poetry to explain the different fruits and vegetables that they come across to those who visit the garden.
Aside from the Garden Manager and her volunteers, those that would benefit from my poetry in the garden would be those who love food and vegetables and fruits in their diets.

Appendices
The research I would undertake would be to figure out what other communities around the world deal with food manipulation and food control and how they would best be helped to eat healthy food and why they are suffering from food insecurity and what I can do to help in my own way through poetry.
The resources I would need are an accurate picture of food insecurity around the world by country as well as a detailed map of the Garden so I can write poetry about the items that are grown there.
