Mom’s tears were first; she drowned

what used to be a lively home poised with hope—

not disaster and tragedy, especially

an unexpected one

which is exactly what it was.

My tears were second. I found myself

falling into a black hole, asking myself

why he would do this.

Gram’s tears were third, when she

discovered that this hellish, disaster-stricken

world had taken yet

another youth without notice: not

in wildfires, hurricanes, or tornadoes

but a hidden epidemic that

can no longer go unnoticed. We

have lost three, young men

in our peaceful, shrub-filled street

that’s supposed to be

one of the safest ones

in the neighborhood. Well… screw that.

No matter where we move,

no matter where we stay, we will never

escape the bony hands of disaster.

It lurks in the shadows of the Unknown and

takes our young and loved ones. So many

have fallen victim to this hidden epidemic

that does not compare to what happened in 2020

and 1918. I lost somebody dear to me

which left a permanent scar on my

fragile heart, knowing that he would have

been spared if he had not accepted

those pills in the first place.
