一名毫無悔意的冷酷殺人犯，在死牢中遇見因政治迫害而被判死刑的新犯人 。新犯人為了回家的執念，不惜徒手挖地、被打得滿身是傷也不放棄 。這份純潔的執著觸動了殺人犯封閉已久的同情心，讓他決定協助新犯人越獄 。兩人成功逃出大門，新犯人看著家人的照片、由衷向他致謝，讓殺人犯重新感受到了靈魂的救贖 。然而，追兵隨即趕到並開槍射擊，新犯人最終帶著遺憾死在曠野中，殺人犯也在中彈臨終前滿懷愧疚，在黑暗中迎來兩人的悲劇結局 。
