The first time Amelia noticed her reflection was late, she assumed she was tired.

This was a reasonable conclusion.

It was 1:13 in the morning, and Amelia had spent the last three hours pretending to study while watching videos on her phone. Her eyes felt dry. Her head hurt. Her brain had apparently stopped functioning several minutes ago.

So when she lifted her hand toward the bathroom mirror and her reflection raised its hand a second later...

Amelia blinked.

The reflection blinked too.

"Okay," she muttered.

The reflection stared back.

Amelia lowered her hand.

The reflection lowered hers.

She raised it again.

This time, the reflection moved immediately.

Amelia stared at the mirror.

The mirror stared back.

"That was weird."

Her reflection nodded.

Amelia froze.

The reflection froze too.

She slowly turned away.

Nothing happened.

She looked back.

Her reflection was standing exactly as it should.

Amelia narrowed her eyes.

"You're lucky I'm tired."

The reflection smiled.

Amelia did not.

She stopped smiling.

The reflection did not.

For three seconds, neither of them moved.

Then the reflection's smile disappeared.

Amelia stared.

Her reflection stared back.

"Okay," she whispered.

The reflection tilted its head.

Amelia did not.

She took a step backward.

The reflection remained where it was.

Amelia's breath caught.

For the first time that night, she was no longer tired.

She reached for the bathroom door.

Amelia had once screamed at a coat hanging behind her bedroom door.

It had been a difficult morning.

So she stood in front of the bathroom mirror and raised her hand.

The reflection copied her perfectly.

She turned left.

It turned left.

She turned right.

It turned right.

She stuck out her tongue.

The reflection did the same.

Amelia sighed with relief.

"See? Nothing's wrong."

Her reflection rolled its eyes.

Amelia stopped.

Slowly, she lowered her hand.

The reflection did not.

It continued rolling its eyes.

Amelia stared at it.

The reflection stared back.

Then it mouthed something.

Amelia leaned closer.

"What?"

The reflection mouthed it again.

This time, Amelia understood.

She screamed.

The reflection screamed too.

A moment later, Amelia's mother shouted from downstairs.

"What happened?"

Amelia stared at the mirror.

The reflection smiled.

Amelia pointed at it.

"Don't."

The reflection shrugged.

Her mother shouted again.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes!"

The reflection nodded.

Amelia stared.

It nodded again.

She covered her face.

"You're so annoying."

The reflection mouthed something.

"What?"

It pointed toward the bathroom door.

Amelia looked.

Nothing was there.

When she turned back, the reflection was still pointing.

Amelia's stomach tightened.

"Stop that."

The reflection slowly shook its head.

Then it pointed behind Amelia.

Amelia did not turn around.

She had seen enough horror movies to understand that this was exactly how people made terrible decisions.

"There's nothing behind me."

The reflection shook its head again.

Amelia looked at the mirror.

The reflection's expression had changed.

It wasn't smiling anymore.

It looked afraid.

That was when Amelia turned around.

There was nothing behind her.

She looked back at the mirror.

Her reflection was gone.

The bathroom was empty.

The mirror showed only the room.

Amelia stood perfectly still.

She turned.

Except the reflection was looking over her shoulder.

Amelia slowly turned around.

Nothing.

When she looked back at the phone, the reflection was smiling.

She threw it across the room.

It struck the wall and fell beneath her desk.

Amelia scrambled to her feet.

That was it.

She was done.

She had spent the entire night being stalked by her own reflection, threatened by a voice that sounded like her, and apparently involved in some sort of supernatural dispute she had never agreed to participate in.

Frankly, she felt she had been very patient.

She grabbed the small mirror from her dresser and hurled it onto the floor.

The glass shattered.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then every piece reflected her.

Dozens of tiny Amelias stared back from the floor.

Some were frightened.

Some were confused.

One was smiling.

Amelia stepped away.

"No."

The smiling reflection raised its hand.

Amelia did not.

It pointed toward the window.

Amelia turned.

Her reflection was standing in the glass.

Not the one from the broken mirror.

The one from the window.

It looked exactly like her.

It was not smiling.

Instead, it was staring at the broken pieces on the floor.

Then it looked at Amelia.

And shook its head.

Amelia understood.

The reflections had never been trying to get out.

They had been trying to warn her.

The thing that had been knocking at the bathroom door was not her reflection.

It was something that had learned how to look like her.

Something that could only enter when she let it.

Amelia slowly looked toward the black screen of her phone beneath the desk.

The reflection on it was no longer smiling.

It was gone.

Amelia stared at the phone.

"You know what?" she whispered.

She looked around the room.

"I am not asking questions anymore."

For the first time since this began, every reflective surface in the room showed exactly what it should.

Amelia.

Alone.

She let out a shaky breath.

Then she noticed the spoon on her desk.

Its curved surface reflected the room.

Amelia.

The bed.

The window.

The broken mirror.

And, standing behind her...

A second Amelia.

Amelia froze.

The reflection in the spoon smiled.

She did not.

Then the phone beneath the desk lit up.

A message appeared on the screen.

"That does seem to be the general consensus tonight."

From somewhere behind her, a voice whispered:

"Amelia?"

She closed her eyes.

The voice spoke again.

This time, it sounded exactly like her.

"Why are you standing in front of the mirror?"

Amelia opened her eyes.

There was no mirror in front of her.

Only the dark window.

And in its reflection, something that looked like Amelia was smiling.

This time, Amelia smiled too.

She had no idea why.

That was the part that frightened her most.
