“So,” he said, “You’ve come to ask for me to see your mother again, haven't you?” He sat back down and started examining the man's wounds, “Didn’t I tell you-- did I not make it clear to you that she has no illness.” He slammed his hand on the nightstand and the candle fell to the floor, dying as it hit the ground. The room became a little darker, and I couldn’t see the doctor’s face. The boy quickly ran and picked up the candle. He relit it and placed it back on the nightstand, and from then, I could see the doctor very well.
“Uh…” I began, “No sir, this visit has nothing to do with my mother. I still think there is something wrong with her, but that can be discussed later, when you're in a better mood…” The doctor snarled at my comment, but I continued, “I’ve come here because my friend, Samuel, our town’s holyman, has fallen from the pub and hurt his back. He needs your help. “
“Everyone needs my help. Everyone.”
“If you could just look him over, Sir.”

The doctor clutched something hanging between his chest, then looked out the small ventilation hole at the top of the tent to the sky. He said, as if fed up, “Of course I can look him over. What kind of doctor would I be to deny a patient.” He slumped over slightly at the middle of his frame and put his head down beside the man’s leg. “You may place him in the free bed over there.” He sounded defeated, as if he were just about to cry.

I helped Samuel to the bed.

“Careful when lifting him,” The doctor said, coming over to assist me. “When someone hurts their back, It’s important that you don’t move them around too much. There’s a risk of exacerbating the injury.”
We laid Samuel comfortably in bed. I tucked him in and he thanked me.
“You have always been a wonderful friend, Peter,” he said with a glow radiating from his cheeks. “And you doctor; I am eternally grateful to have you here to help me heal. It is truly a godly thing for you to assist your fellow man in healing, like Jesus did. I'm sure there is a special place for you in heaven, right beside the best of our people. Right beside your daughter, no doubt.” Samuel turned his face into the pillow and quickly fell asleep.
The doctor looked at me with frustration in his eyes, exuding from his furrowed brow. I saw that between his chest, just like the boy who helped me, there was a golden cross necklace that hung in the center of his well defined pectorals. The doctor, despite his drinking, was in good shape for a man his age. He was strong and handsome, but of his character, there was a mysterious air about him. As if, just behind his cunning eyes, was an entirely different person pressing to be let out.
