The boy, just as fast as he went, came running down from the house with two bottles and a glass in hand. Sweating and panting, he placed them down on the table, “Here you are sir. I'm sorry for the delay, these were on the top shelf and I had to find the stool. For some reason it was in the attic, below the rafters.”207Please respect copyright.PENANAaNoMZxQMMc
The doctor snachted up one of the bottles and ripped off its lid. He poured himself another glass, and dismissed the boy by telling him not to think too much about the stool, that it was most likely the maid dusting.
The boy took this excuse and ran off back to the house, leaving just the doctor and I to talk.
He poured me a glass and slid it over, “Here, take this and join me in sedation. Doctor’s orders.”
I took the glass up to my nose and swirled it around. “This is good stuff,” I said naively. 207Please respect copyright.PENANA2xXtzpZqrU
He laughed slightly and readjusted himself in his chair, “It better be. I’ve spent good money on these bottles, and had my servants travel far to get them. I can’t swallow what is made in town. It reminds me too much of when I was young and dumb. Even the smell makes me…” he took a large sip, “Sorry, even talking about it makes my insides ache.”207Please respect copyright.PENANAZjKbd28G1B
“I understand,” I said, sipping my Scotch, “reminiscing is a painful game for some.”207Please respect copyright.PENANAeu8nCTQtRB

“Oh, those are not my words-- I am no wiser than any other youngman with hopes and dreams. It was something Samuel told me before he fell. I'm not sure what in your past bothers you, but for him, there seemed to be a great deal of pain in his childhood, some of which I witnessed but did not understand till he explained it to me tonight. I think, because of it though, he has become what he is now: a great man that benefits the community with his love, just as you benefit them with your careful hands. And I assume the same for you. So in the end, there is no reason to look back; we can just focus on what is in front of us and be thankful that those times have come to an end.” I stopped talking, anxious by the way Theodore was looking at me that I might have crossed a line.
